CTCA was established in July 2011 by WHO, the Centre for Tobacco Control in Africa (CTCA) is largely funded with resources from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). Other funding partners include International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and National Institutes of Health. The Centre, hosted by Makerere University School of Public Health, was setup by the World Health Organization premised on the unmet need to build tobacco control capacity for African governments to accelerate the implementation of the WHO FCTC. CTCA is guided by the vision of a sustainable, leading Centre of Excellence in empowering and facilitating tobacco control to achieve tobacco-free Africa. CTCA has operated in the following African countries; Angola, Botswana, Gabon, The Gambia, Kenya, Mauritania, Niger, South Africa and Uganda. The Centre’s mandate is to (1) provide technical and institutional support to African governments, (2) establish strategic partnerships with key partners involved in tobacco control such as WHO, CTFK, the Union, etc; (3) promote the generation of local evidence to drive policy implementation; (4) facilitate establishment of new trainings programs.

Overview of CTCA’s services in Phase III ( 2019- 2025)
During phase III, CTCA will focus on developing capacity for African governments to spearhead tobacco control initiatives, through establishment of national tobacco control programmes, narrowing the gap between policy formulation and implementation, promoting evidence-based action, and mobilizing adequate resources to support TC programmes.
