Uganda’s president Yoweri K. Museveni has promised to sign the Tobacco Contol Bill as soon as it gets to his office. The president was on Saturday August 4th visiting the CTCA-MakSPH stall during the launch of the celebrations to mark 90 years of Makerere University.

The Uganda Tobacco Control Bill is scheduled to be tabled in Parliament for the first reading this September by a Private Member,  Hon. Chris Baryomunsi.

On July 24th, a public hearing with the Tobacco Industry was held during which the TI was given two weeks to make their submission into the Bill. A consultative meeting with MPs and District leaders from the tobacco growing regions is also scheduled to take place this month before the first reading.

The Speaker of Uganda’s Parliament, Hon. Rebecca Kadaga has also pledged to ensure that the bill is passed into law before the end of this year.
