The capacity building for the CTCA aims at supporting African governments to implement strong national tobacco control programs that would lead to reducing tobacco consumption and the burden of disease due to tobacco in Africa.

The CTCA will:

Avail  evidence on effective tobacco control interventions in the different articles of the WHO FCTC  in order to build/strengthen country capacity in the broader areas of communication and advocacy, resource mobilisation, partnership development and networking, research, monitoring and evaluation for tobacco control. The CTCA will gather,  package, translate and disseminate the evidence on an on going manner.

Provide toolkits for specific tobacco control work in English, French and Portuguese . The tool kits will include training materials, resource packs, capacity assessment process outlines and modules in the different FCTC areas

Deliver training packages including country Trainer of Trainers, orientation/sensitisation, in various areas for tobacco control in order to build a pool of experts and human resource to support country efforts for increased tobacco control funding, networking, advocacy, communication, M&E etc.

Mentor and build on going tobacco control capacity through participating in country specific capacity assessments, organising  experiential learning and exchange  programs, participating in country specific tobacco control interventions among other things.

On going:

Since July 2011, the CTCA has participated in three joint capacity assessment sessions organised by WHO and the country governments of Uganda, Keny and Republic of South Africa. Findings from the assessments were shared with the specific countries and recommendations made to them as well. Final reports are being compiled and will be shared with the Countries assessed.

Future plans:

The CTCA will carry out two capacity assessments targeting Angola and Mauritania by mid 2012.
