Price and tax measures to reduce the demand for tobacco

Increased taxes on tobacco products leading to increased prices is the most cost effective measure to reduce consumption of tobacco especially among youth.   Article 6 of the WHO- Framework Convention on Tobacco Control recommends that governments adopt appropriate price and tax policies that contribute to reduce the consumption of tobacco products. In order to effectively implement such price and tax policies, which will result in sustainably higher revenues, governments need strong Ministries of Finance, capable of adequate tax administration. It is in this area that CTCA can help.

CTCA and WHO Tobacco Control Economics team are working with countries to strengthen their tobacco tax systems. For more details see  “WHO/TFI”
